The Science Behind PurOxy
How PurOxy Actually Works: The Science Behind Pet Odor Elimination
Your dog used the turf again. Most cleaners cover up the smell. PurOxy gets rid of it. Here's why that difference matters, and exactly how it works.
Why Most Cleaners Don't Work on Artificial Turf
Artificial turf looks like grass. It doesn't work like grass. Natural soil has microbes that break down organic waste over time. Synthetic turf has none of that. Urine, sweat, and organic residue collect between the fibers and in the infill, protected from sunlight and airflow.
Enzyme-based cleaners introduce bacteria that digest organic material. They need the right pH, they work slowly (sometimes 24 hours or more), and they get washed away before finishing the job. More importantly, they don't touch uric acid crystals. Those crystals are the main reason pet urine keeps smelling, even after you've cleaned.
Fragrance-based cleaners don't remove anything. They add a competing smell on top of the existing one. When the fragrance fades, the original odor comes right back. That's why your turf still smells in summer heat even after you've sprayed it down.
🔬 Research note: Artificial turf surfaces can hold significantly more bacteria than natural grass. Reduced UV exposure at the fiber level and limited natural drainage mean organic waste builds up faster than it breaks down.

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is water with one extra oxygen atom. At 6% concentration, it becomes an oxidizing agent. When it contacts organic compounds like urea and uric acid, it releases reactive oxygen that breaks apart the chemical bonds holding those molecules together.
It doesn't cover the odor. It takes apart the molecules causing it. Once those bonds are broken, the compounds can't produce odor because they no longer exist in their original form.
After the reaction finishes, hydrogen peroxide breaks down completely into water and oxygen. No chemical residue. No toxic byproduct. Nothing left on your turf, patio, or deck.
🔬 Research note: Hydrogen peroxide at 3 to 6% concentration eliminates 99.9% of common bacteria including E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus on hard surfaces.

They're largely insoluble in water but break down through oxidation. That makes oxidative cleaners significantly more effective than water-based or enzyme approaches for chronic odor problems.

Is It Actually Safe for Pets and Kids?
That's the question we hear the most. The short answer is yes. Here's the longer one.
At 6% concentration, hydrogen peroxide is the same active ingredient used in first-aid wound care and teeth-whitening products. It's not a harsh industrial chemical. When it contacts organic material on your turf, the concentration drops quickly as the reaction takes place.
PurOxy's formula has no bleach, no phosphates, and no harsh surfactants. It won't irritate skin, eyes, or respiratory tracts. It won't leave a slippery residue on turf fibers. And once it dries, there's nothing left on the surface at all.
- Bleach-free — no chlorine compounds that irritate skin or airways
- Phosphate-free — won't throw off soil or lawn nutrient balance
- No harsh surfactants — no slippery residue left on turf
- Self-neutralizing — H₂O₂ breaks down to water and oxygen after reacting. Once dry, nothing harmful remains.
Keep pets off the treated area until it's fully dried. Once dry, kids and dogs can be back on it without any concern.
🔬 Research note: Hydrogen peroxide decomposes naturally into water and oxygen after its oxidative reaction is complete. No persistent chemical residue remains on treated surfaces, making it one of the lowest-risk disinfecting agents available for home use.
